Coal Industry

Uzbekistan possesses explored coal reserves at a volume of 1900 mln.tn including brown coal - 1853 mln.tn, black coal – 47 mln.tn. Forecasting coal resources are over 5.7bln.tn. Large reserves of black coal concentrated in the south regions of the Republic in Surkhandarya and Kashkadarya districts. At present the coal mining are explored at 3 deposits: Angren, Shargun and Baysun.

OJSC «Uzbekugol» (it included in the structure of SJSC «Uzbekenergo» since 2001),OJSC «Shargunkumir» and OJSC «Apartak» are undertaken the coal mining in Uzbekistan. At Angren coal deposit, coal strip mine «Angrenskiy» is exploring coal by open-cut mining manner, besides, the OJSC «Erostigas» produces gas from brown coal by method of underground gasification.

The OJSC «Uzbekugol» is mining about 3mln. tn of coal annually. The main consumer of coal fuel is the Power Sector, which share is over 85 % of total coal consumption. The coal fuel demand formed also by enterprises of industry, social and utility companies and population.

The main factors of priority coal industry development are following:

Viability of coal substitution of more valuable energy resources, for the aim of their using for country economic needs;

Need of increasing of coal’s share in the structure of the country power balance.

«The Program of Further Coal Industry Development» includes 6 stages of technical re-equipment, modernization of enterprises, introduction of advanced resource-saving technologies, promoting the improvement of coal mining efficiency.

Realization of planned measures on modernization and technical re-tooling of the coal industry will provide achievement of required expansion rate of production, covering the Republic’s demand in solid fuel for the medium and long-term perspective, will allow to accept coal as prevailing fuel in the power production.
